Let's create a binded, laminated C172 Checklist from scratch

I fly a Skyhawk G1000 for which my checklist is updated on a regular basis, so I created the latest version on kneeboard.ga. It’s a rather simple 6 pager including cover, “Before you go”, 2 pages Preflight, “Flight” and “Parking”. These sheets are public with codes RC (Font page) S5 (Preflight) and FO (Flight and Parking). Here is the printed outcome:

I fold these sheets in the middle, which gives me perfect kneeboard fit:

Lamination is your best friend when you 1) toss your checklist on the cowling on a rainy day, 2) drop it in a stain of engine oil on the ramp and 3) grab it with fuel sprayed gloves, but I am sure you can come up with your own good reasons. For lamination I use a Scotch machine. For pouches, I originally wet with 3mil, then upgraded to 5mil, which feels much better. You can by these for 25c a sheet (x100) on Amazon.

When positioning folded sheets in the pouch, mind the direction so the sheet fold matches pouch. In the meantime, start the laminator machine which takes forever to warm up (at least mine does)

Run every page through the machine.

Cut the excess, leaving 1/2 inch to the left of the page for binding. Note the clip on the right for repeat cuts. You want all pages the same width. The photo on the right shows the outcome, note sharp corners on the left and round corners to the right.

For binding, I went to Staples for the first few iterations, which charge around $5. It’s a good deal but I was getting random quality so I ended up buying the binding machine so I could blame myself for the randomness. Next, I round those sharp corners:

All three pages end up looking like this before binding

Insert the roller and clip it (clipper comes with the binding machine)

I am always pleased with the outcome. Otherwise, there is always the next version coming out at some point.

And voila, I hope this guide gave you ideas to create things of your own. Kneeboard.ga did not revolutionize the process but certainly made the whole thing quicker, thanks to quick edits and easy printing.
